Scarista Sands from Cheapabhal

1st May 2000. A baking hot day for May, but nobody is sunbathing on Scarista beach. This photo was taken from the SE slopes of Cheapabhal.

This is the stretch of Harris coastline that forms the backdrop to Finlay J Macdonald's humerous and nostalgic accounts of growing up in the years between the wars. The building on the right, presenting the largest plash of white, is the church and to it's left is the former manse. The derelict manse was converted into an award winning hotel in the 1980's by Alison and Andrew Johnson, a story described in Alison's book 'A House by the Shore'.
